"Almighty, eternal, just and merciful God, grant us the desire to do only what pleases you, and the strength to do only what you command. Cleanse our souls, enlighten our minds, and inflame our hearts with your Holy Spirit that we may follow in the footsteps of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ." St. Francis of Assisi
Giovanni di Pretro di Bernardone, Francesco, was an Italian Roman Catholic friar and preacher. It is argued that no one else in history was as dedicated as Francis to imitate the life of Christ and do His work. Thus, this well-known (in some circles) prayer unpacks an amazing heart's cry from which each of us can learn.
For the record, my whole life I was reminded by my Aunt Anita Cantadore Signorelli that this was the prayer from my namesake (Francis/Francesco). Also for the record, it meant nothing to me until I accepted Christ and decided to follow Him and His ways. (I was pretty thickheaded...and you say, "WAS"????...LOL!)
How do we get to the place of surrender with a like-minded heart's desire? "Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-mind. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up." James 4:8-10
Let's get at it!
